ok So a few days ago my car started making a faint squeeking sound. It wasnt much, but it was alarming. at first I shrugged it off but the more I drove it the more I realized something is very wrong. First, It sounded like rubber or plastic rubbing(pulley, belts, pumps.etc.) but the more I searched the deeper I was looking. It sounds like its coming from inside the engine and I have noticed a drop in coolant as well as excess fluid out of the exhaust but no milky oil... Very strange. Please help. thanks for the info in advance.-Jordan

Sounds like a head gaskest started the problem. And the squeeking may be from a bad rod bearing. I would stop driving it till you get get things open and checked. But expect a rebuild.

Pull all the spark plugs, do a compression check and scope each cylinder. Check for really clean pistons.

should I even attempt to bring it to the dealer. historically they have been very very genorous to me as far as warranty work. what are my options if it is a rod bearing?

would the engine still make power and keep water temps down if there was a problem like that?

M6... mabye a throw out bearing?
They say check the cadence of a noise with things that rotate to a specific point.
i.e. each pully makes a different number of revs per enginge rev...

unless the noise if perfectly continuous... then it may be pressure releasing from somewhere.

If it is a rod bearing the end is near. A squeaking noise is a bit difficult to troubleshoot from 1400 or so miles away. You should be able to see any abnormal metal flakes just by checking the dipstick BUT you should drain the oil and check it out. If it is a rod bearing and you continued to drive it your crank will need machine work, and you would need to somehow flush the oil system to get all the metal out of it. In otherwords it will need to be rebuilt or replaced if it is a rod bearing. Also when you change the oil get an oil filter cutter and open it up so you can look between the pleats of the filter. Any large quanities of metal in the filter indicates a bearing issue. A small flec here and there may be ok. And for your sake I hope it is something stupid like the idler pulley or alternator going bad. I'm sending good wishes via mind power right now,,good luck man.

If you rely on guesswork from people who know nothing and haven't seen your car, you'll have the entire engine disassembled before someone who knows what they're doing comes along and tells you what the real problem is. Get it to a qualified mechanic.

your correct but,I consider myself a qualified mechanic. I was simply looking for an educated guess from one of our forums top contributers such as yourself and blackdevil. I appreciate the help and all the comments.

I am going on the experiances I've had with LSx builds and tear downs. Seen a couple engines that have had bad rod bearings and had a sound you speek of.

I would also gather this outcome will be similar to JED's problem. And needing a full rebuild.

Either way, I would like to know what happens once you find out.

ok so update. I changed my oil to the new mobil 1 just realeased. 0-30.oh ya!!! so anyway. the squeeking went away. i checked the oil, split the filter and went through everything! NOTHING!!!! no glitter, no metal and I have a magnetic drain plug. Absolutly perfect! So now about 500 miles later...today. it starts the bullshit again. this squeeking at idle and low rpm up to 2,000. Then at 2,800 it just starts knocking. I really really think its a deflated/failed lifter. cause the cars making a shit load of power running normal except at low input/ low rev. I get this knock. I will try and make a video of it and put it up. I hate my F-ing dealer so I'm not so keen on asking them to deduce the problem. Sorry for the long post guys. any suggestions on new lfters? any tech info on this?

So this is a constant noise that does not go away as the car warms up?

#26 ·
yes but its selective. like it wont always make this noise or knock. Like last night, I backed the car up to the garage to get the groceries out of trunk, (my driveway is at downgrade of 2/3 % very small grade slope.) so the nose is pointed down hill. Me and the girlfriend get in the car to go to blockbuster and it does it like hell! we get to blockbuster and come back out, I start it,NO NOISE, crazy the pretty little thing in my avatar likes when :gears: and race ppl So I laid the smack down on a mustang before we got home but then I'm pulling in the driveway and it starts squeeking again.:drink:

I have a questions that pertains to squeaking also. I get squeaking every 3 or 4 starts that squeaks with the engine speed, but goes away when it warms up. I am thinking something in the belt. I don't here any engine knocking, just a squeaking, and it seems as though it is coming from the front.

Sorry to semi-hijack the thread....

ok thanks for the info. I'm gonna be puting my new lifters in tomorrow, and we'll see what the deal is here. not too excited but I need to know!!!! so I appreciate all the comments helpful or not and ill take pics and keep you guys posted.

I had an old school smallblock 350 that had a bearing squeaking internally. It didn't live long. You had better tear it down and see what's going on.

I had to replace the lifters in my LS1 truck awhile back. It would sound fine cold but would start ticking when it warmed up. It turned out one of the lifters was leaking down the more I drove it. I replaced the lifters with some LS7 lifters and havent had a problem yet.... knock on wood! haha. Good luck with it and look the heads and pistons over when you get it pulled apart. You might want to borrow a leak down tester before you pull the heads off to check the compression too. Good Luck

Yeah keep us posted, and make sure your magnetic drain bolt is working (see if metal sticks to it). Tracking down oil and bearing issues in these blocks can sometimes be ghost hunts. The more documented cases we have the better.

absolutly, I've found that listening to everyone's approach and ideas have been far more benaficial because of my technical inclination, I can desifer which comments are correct, usefull, not even close..,etc... So I will let everyone know how this goes today. Wish me luck!
