Trans Fluid Refill - Car Orientation

This is, probably somewhere in these forums, but I got tired of reading 100's of posts.

I have never done this before, so bare with me please.

I don't have a floor jack or jack stands. I could buy some, but I have two Rhino ramps.

1) How should the car tilt to get the maximum drain of the old fluid?
2) I have no idea where the bolts are that I need to remove. Could someone tell me where on the tranny they are? Drain and fill?
3) When I drain and refill the rear diff, will the tilt remain the same or different?
4) I've seen 75w140 and 85w140. Which is it? Why?
5) What about changing out the clutch fluid? Where do I drain it? How much of what do I fill the reservoir with? Do I need to bleed it?

I change my own oil and filter and I would like to have a little experience with the drivetrain fluid replacements too.

Thanks

Dave

Presuming you are talking about M6. I believe you drop the pan on a A4.
I'd like to know about the tilt. Popular opinion on this site has that you can get out 4.6 quarts of ATF. I just did my Z06 (level on jackstands) and only got out 3.2 quarts and it is the same transmission. It took exactly 3.2 to fill it up to the temp sensor(fill) hole. I'm going to do the GTO tonight.

I'd say you will need the jackstands and a good floor jack (at least 18" lift) or at least an additional set of ramps to get the car up.

I'll let others answer the rest since I haven't done it yet.

I'm sorry. It is an M6.

I need to get a floor jack anyhow. Will a 2 ton work? Or should I get a 2-1/2?

2 ton should be sufficient. I am partial to the Sears low profile (Need it for the Z06) but there are other good ones. I owned a cheap one before I got the Sears and ,Wow, what a difference.

I guess I won't be changing out my trans and diff fluids today: it is currently raining sideways.

I assume its an M6?
1,2,3):I did everything with the car level - my driveway slopes and with rhino ramps on one end the car is level. Changed trans fluid with fron on ramps, diff with car turned around and rears on ramps.
Drain bolt is on right side of trans - it takes a 3/8" square drive - just ratchet and extension, no socket etc., Fill is through reverse switch - use 4.6 qts of ATF or (my choice - RP Synchromax)
Diff drain and fill are obvious - don't lose the seal washer from the fill plug - which needs a 30mm socket or a big crescent wrench.
4): I used the 75W-140 RP Maxgear - OEM is 80W140. Some folks use the 85W-140
5): haven't done it.

I'm in San Antonio too - drop me a PM if you need some help

Got a 2 1/4 ton floor jack from Sears. 5 1/2 to 15 1/2 range and two jack stands.

Got Maxgear 85W140. Will the Maxgear be OK or should I go back? They had another Syncromax for manual trans. It didn't have a viscocity rating on it. Was that the 75W140?

No the Synchromax is a synthetic ATF with other stuff in it - its for Manual trans only.

The Maxgear is for the diff and it comes in either 75W140 or 85W140 - some folks on this forum like each - I used the 75W140.

OK. I drained it fine. Nobody told me where the fill is. I found a fill nut (3/8 notch) on the left side. Is it supposed be so hard? Geez. Can someone tell me EXACTLY where they filled it up?

I'm UNDER THE CAR RIGHT NOW. wHAT f'N FILL HOLE ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT?

Sorry for the caps, but this is a pain.

How do I get the fluid in?

You are supposed to fill it through the hole used by the reverse light switch. It should be fairly high up on the tranny, I havent done it yet so I cant orient you to where on the trans it is, but its not a plug its a hole used by a sensor that your going to have to remove. I just want to make sure your not putting Maxgear in the trans are you?

All I get from here is this fill hole and that fill hole. I have an entire garage floor full of $9.50 per qt tranny fluid.

Geez

The fill is on the passenger side of the transmission, middle of the transmission, about halfway up. there is a wire harness going to it. Disconnect the wire harness (backup switch) and then unbolt the sensor using a 7/8" or 22mm wrench. Fill until fluid starts to come back out the hole, or you've put in 4.6 quarts. Put the sensor back in, connect the switch and you are done.

I did it for the first time this morning. I'll be paying someone else to do it from now on (not hard, just messy).

Sorry about ranting here.

I just got out of the shower to get good portion of the tranny fluid out of my hair.

What I ended up doing is pulling a black plug off of the right upper side and running a hose down to get the flui d in. It didn't go in very fast as my daughter poured it in the funnel at the top. Is this normal? Is it the riight hole?

Thanks

Dave
