So I was MMOB south of the border in Mexico, chilling in a parking lot talking to a possible future Goat owner who I just let take a little test drive in the Blue Beast. I see a new 5.0 creeping up towards the Goat and was praying he would stop so I could ask for a run. Musta been my lucky day cause thats exactly what he did.

He rolls down his window and says "Hey man nice GTO... "

I responded with "Thanks! Nice 5.0 you have there... been looking for one of those to run."

He says "Thanks, I was actually just about to ask you if you wanted to run."

I agree and we bsed a little bit (about mods etc) before rolling out.... he seemed very confident in his car (not that I blame him). I said we should even the weight up because our cars are very closely matched (no passenger with me). He says hes not worried about it and would run with the 2 people in his car. Also made a comment about wanting to add this to his video collection and how he had already killed a Goat a little while back. I knew this was going to be some close races... so we roll out and he follows me to a spot that I run at in Mexico. When we pull up to the parking lot, his passenger gets out and decides hes going to be riding with me after all. So we both have 1 passenger, two cameras rolling (wish I could get his videos cause my camera man wasnt the best).

Here are the results...

Thank you!

Its in the works... that and LS3 heads with self ported stage 2 LS3 intake (been planning it for a while, waiting to get a little ahead on bills first) Have a free dyno tune via SNL from Goat Fest 6 I won (THANK YOU SNL!!!!)... so as soon as the heads go on, straight to Dallas I go!

Tried to upload to photobucket in every format I could think of... wmv, mpeg 1, mpeg 2, flv, avi... etc but I keep getting an error and it wont upload it. Sorry I tried... still open for suggestions if you know a better place that will work.

First off since you cant see the video you didnt get details on the car...
Bone stock M6 w/3.31 gears not 3.73s

1st dig... we both spin a little out of the hole... take it up to around 100mph (end of third gear and I slammed 4th but he let out shortly after) Had about 1 car I would say... unfortunately my camera man kept point the camera forward before the runs where over.

1st 40 roll, pretty close once again camera guy kinda smurf it up... its hard to tell from video but I had about 1/2 car to whole car before he let out, about midway through 3rd I would say. I started in 1st @ 40mph... slammed 2nd, slammed 3rd for a bit and then he let out.

2nd 40 roll, I get him by about 2 cars, started in 1st @ 40mph all the way to the top of 3rd and was going strong. This is the best roll on video I have... we did one more roll @40mph but it wasnt recorded on my camera (his only).

2nd dig, I honk it off (honked both off actually, and its kinda awkard for me to do so), give him a very slight hit cause he was a bit late off the 3rd honk, but I also spun pretty bad, started getting a little sideways and had to countersteer. She straightened up quick, slammed second and pulled back even by the top of 2nd, 3rd we were pretty much dead even until the very top where i started pulling out, slammed 4th for just a second and then he let out. Got him by about 1/2 car to a whole car...

All very good runs...

We talked afterwards and he was complaining about the stock clutch pedal, said it was like an on off switch (my Textralia is for sure with the tick master, but I have learned how to use it and I love it) He said he needs to get a GT500 clutch pedal because its easier to use or some shit like that...

I mostly just read here, but he's probably right about that. I've had some problems with the pedal in my 5.0 during high-rpm shifts as well. Not on-off, more like on-off-not quite back on again.

Time slips from 10/29/10 @ Houston Raceway Park 1/4 mile drag strip... 12.889 pass is my best to date and still a shity 60ft. I go back this friday to get my 12.7 or 12.6, maybe 12.5 (I can dream right?)

I know I can do it if I get my 60ft down... I screwed up and cupped my tires unintentionally that night. I thought dropping my PSI down to 20 would help. But it was actually killing my 60fts, because I run a Nitto Nt555 275/40/17 on my stock 8" wheel. Found out after the fact it caused my tire to cup in the middle and thats why i was spinning out of the hole, only contact from the tires was on the two outer edges. Weather is going to be just as good this friday, so planning on going for it again on 30PSI.

This was my previous best run from around this time last year... weather wasnt as good though. Was slightly hotter (around low 60s high 50s) and we had a 15mph head wind all night long. These passes were made on very hard 500 tread rating michelin pilot sport a/s plus 245/45/17 tires @ around 30 PSI. I am pretty damn confident now with these better tires... they hook much better.

Nice man!! only thing is that he didnt have 3.73s............i wonder how(if any) different it would have been.

#12 ·
I am guessing he would have done better out of the hole and probably closer throughout the gears, but I imagine towards the top end I would still pull him. Top of 3rd and begining of 4th he tended to start dropping off pretty good... I wish he would have stayed in longer so we could have run 4th out though to really see.

Hes getting a tune and CAI soon... so I know I need to be ready next time cause its going to be a slightly different ball game. I have mod plans in the future though too... and I have dropped about 50 lbs off the car since we last ran. Not much... but ever bit helps, I have a total of roughly 120lbs weight reduction... and I only weigh in at 140. I estimate the car to weigh in right at around 3750 with a half tank of gas and me in the car...

I was just about to ask about this video on here as I just saw it on the Tube. I have to be honest I'm surprised at the outcome. Have you had your car on the dyno with its current setup? Good runs regardless! That might sway my decision in the spring...go brand new and get a stang...or go used and get a GTO and save ~10 grand :)

Who taught you how to honk? haha

if he's stock the clutch peddle is 90% not going to stick. he just got beat. GK.

Nice runs.

And no. a .042 numerically higher gear set would not have dramatically altered this outcome. Dig 2 tells the story. OP screwed the launch and the Mustang still couldn't out run him. "If he had 3.73 gears" is ricer math. Ok. "If OP had an MS4.....". If if if.

Once again good runs. Dont pay any attention to the eventual "stock for stock" keyboard racers or the ".042 gear difference is a 100 shot bro!" nonsense.

(The following is not directed personally at you. Just at the ruling thought that dominates the nets kill sections)

Final gear ratios to the ground, tire diameter, wheel diameter, launch RPM, shift RPM, shift time, CD, and probably most importantly; torque band and where the engine makes its power in relation to how its being applied and through all the other variables at the time. (Among many other things like weight balance, torque converter STR or clutch slip, and a bazillion other things)

Simply looking at weight and peak horsepower is rudimentary thinking with race out comes. Somehow, in the Internet of grand thoughts and MASS information it still seems to be the dominating formula for people though. "Whats the weight and peak final HP number? That means the winner!" /fail

Nice kill OP.

:woot:Good kills bro.
Thanks, I had a blast... very good runs and I am glad he put a passenger in my car to even the weight out. These two cars are very closely matched... despite all the hype that says otherwise.

I'm a little confused. What mods do you have that pertain to making more HP/torque? How would you beat a (presumably) lighter car making more HP than you?
I get alot of people that call BS on this but here it goes...I did 2 dyno runs on GForce of Pearlands DynoJet and pulled 360rwhp/350rwtq back to back totally bone stock (other then Vararam OTRCAI). Many people say thats high and its because its a dyno jet... but either way its just numbers. I have since swapped the Vararam out for a Svede OTRCAI w/IAT relocate sensor (amazing product!!!!) I have not put the car back on the dyno sense adding the clutch setup and ported intake/tb.

My only current power adder mods are, the Svede OTRCAI w/IAT relocate and my stage 1 home ported LS2 intake manifold. Signature says ported TB also, but I dont have one because It was faster to sell him my ported one and redo mine then port his and make him wait. TB doesnt add HP anyways, its mostly throttle response. Other then that the full clutch setup is a huge help also... Textralia OZ700 Z Grip Clutch (similar to monster 3), Tick master cylinder, stainless clutch lines and a GMM ripshifter (short shifter). Oh and a driver mod...

The new 5.0s weigh in at 3605lbs curb weight (full fluids, no driver/passengers). My car weighs in at 3725lbs curb weight.... and I had about 75 lbs removed at the time... (Trunk stripped and no V tow brace). So my car was actually closer to 3650 curb weight at the time... even if I was full weight it would not have changed things very much. Your talking about roughly 7hp... although every little bit surely helps!

Who taught you how to honk? haha
Yeah I honked the 2 digs, he honked the rolls... I am kinda shitty at honking digs because I am thinking about RPMs, and releasing the clutch etc etc. I was definitely slow on the honks for the 2nd dig. I wanted to have my passenger do it, but he was too busy recording (not very good at that either tbh lol...) Also apologize for the dark video... I am going to pick up a better HD camera w/zoom and grab one of WRPs camera mounts so I wont have to rely on other people to record stuff (they arent always down for the drive to Mexico you know? ;)

I'm in Clear Lake, so if you've got room for one more the next time you go play shoot me a PM.
Definitely will Joe Dirt! Its been a while since these runs went down, but I know one day we will line them up again...

if he's stock the clutch peddle is 90% not going to stick. he just got beat. GK.
Interesting... what is he talking about with the pedal? I thought it could be a legitimate reason... but I have no idea what hes talking about.

Nice runs.

Thank you Coolaid and very well said! Even I have made the mistake of bench racing with just power to weight ratio in mind, but there is definitely many many other factors that come into play. Appreciate the wise input...

I and other answered your question... yes I the new 5.0s run high to mid 12s in the 1/4 mile. I am running high to mid 12s in the 1/4 mile, i even posted my time slips...

2.1 60ft and ran a 12.889 @111.30 mph, as I stated I am going back this friday to cut my 1.8-2.0 60ft and grab my 12.5-12.7sec pass.

Also your talking about a very minimal amount of weight difference... (every bit helps though)

So what question/s of yours still stand?

#29 ·
No, I'm good. You took a little weight out and added a few HP and under those circumstances you can run with a bone stock 5.0. Got it. Keep us posted on your experiences at the track. I'm from the turbo Buick experience, where any dumbass can run 1.6 shorts with a few hundred bucks invested.

#31 ·
Yep... I am not "bone stock" but I think I am one of the lightest modded GTOs to take one down.

Thx... will keep you guys posted, look forward to hitting the track up tomorrow!

#35 ·
yea ive been waiting to see a lightly modded goat race one. all the ones that have raced the stangs are heavily modded gtos so its hard to compare. Id say what ur about 375 at the wheels maybe a little more?

#33 ·
good stuff josh. i remember u told me about this race like the night it happened. i see youve finally posted it. very interesting vid.

#37 ·
Thanks

It has been a little while for sure... I am thinking about a month or so, I get frustrated with sony vegas sometimes and making the videos so I shy away from it. But I am getting fairly good at it now... and this was one I had to get out!

good job proving all the 5.0 nutswingers like myself wrong OP.

:)

 nice kill man

8 Ball, I believe it is... he kept saying that he was buying a GT500 clutch pedal to fix his stock one that sucked. I assume he did the research and knows it will work.

Thanks Jpvulpes and Lonestar!

Owning a Mustang and knowing what the Hell you're talking about usually don't go hand in hand. :p

Ok, that was my shot at Mustang boiz in this thread. But yes, after doing a little research, it is possible. Slightly different design that gives it a more positive feel via spring location. That being said, unless he was saying his pedal was sticking (what the problem is at high RPM shifts), then the clutch being "like an on/off" switch isn't going to lose you a race. Think he was just reaching for an excuse ;)

Not really you get his pin you can get x plan...X is Fords GM supllier...kinda..
