A/C dead for the 5th time. Why?

I have a 2004 GTO, and the A/C has died for the 5th (maybe even 6th) time now. I take it back to the dealer every 6 months, and they recharge it, and CLAIM they fixed it! Well, they finally agreed to extend the warranty on the A/C system, because of all the problems with it. So, now its dead AGAIN!
The car does sometimes sit not driven for 6 months (Winter). It sits in a heated garage, and every spring the A/C is dead, and then usually once in summer it dies too. The dealer obviousely has no-clue how to fix this, so I'm hoping some of you guys maybe had the same problems, and maybe know what to "Look for"? Anyone?

The dealer tries to tell me that it leaks out because it doesn't get driven much. I'm not believing that, but maybe I am mistaken......
Its a 04, and only has 3,000 miles on it. Its just a summer toy that doesn't get driven enough! :)

Anyone have any ideas that could help me out?
Thanks in advance!

AC work isn't rocket science (no pun intended on your name lol), and the GTO AC is not that special. Any shop or dealer that knows what they are doing should be able to find where the system is leaking, apparently your current dealer does not meet that qualification.

I had mine recharged three times at a shop. Finally got it to work. Something about if the impellers aren't aligned (or whatever's inside an AC unit), it won't fully charge.

When they recharge mine, it works GREAT for a few weeks, and sometimes a couple months.............but soon after looses charge as usual. It blows completely warm air again right now.

Well good luck, I doubt you'll get too far with them. Once you let them have it they'll just be more pissed off and that much less likely to actually fix it. I'd try and find another dealer if there are any within range, or otherwise take it to a good local shop and pay their diagnostic fee to find the problem then go back with the report and make the dealer do the repairs.
Lots of these cars sit around and have low mileage, they don't all have leaky AC systems. The modern 134A systems do not lose their charge over time like the older R12, when it does happen there is usually a leak due to damage (i.e. rock hit on the condenser) or a bad seal.
It could be that there is another issue rather than (or in addition to) a leak. The compressor is a variable displacement type (again not unique to the GTO, many GM's use it), the vanes could be sticking but that's just a guess. What you described sure sounds like a leak though.

I'm gonna call them and ask them about the warranty that they extended on this A/C system, and then when they explain a bit more of its details, I'll ask if its covered at ALL Pontiac dealers.....When they say YES, then I'll kindly tell them THANKS and inform them that I'll be going to their closest competitor because they obviousely are not able to fix it in 5 tries!

It's obvious the knuckle heads you are taking it to don't know how to use a leak detector or how to inject dye into the system. You have a major leak somewhere, refrigerant doesn't just burn off or dissipate; demand an electronic leak search of the entire system!! If they cannot fix it take it to another dealer at GM's expense.

Does sound like a leak. They should have put dye in it the first time they charged it. Mine was low and the dealer checked it and recharged the system and added dye on the first time. If they have put dye in it and still can't find the leak, checking the compressor, condensor core, expansion valve and lines under the hood. Then most likely it is the evaporator core in the dash. The evap.core is the hardest to check for a leak due to it's location.

so now it is just perfectly normal for coolant to leak away as a car sits in a nice climate controlled environment???

these dishonest mechs\dealers should be shot.

Call gm's tech division and tell them what you were told. See if they laugh.

Yeah, I agree they are BS'ing you.

I had the same problem, however my dealer had the presence of mind to add dye the first time they recharged. It came back to a bad schrader fill valve. They replaced the fifty cent part and it has held so far, too bad they were out all that money for refrigerant. Ahhh well.

Because you have a slow leak and your dealer is too incompetent to find it.
Seems like the dealership knows all about O-rings. They are talking out of them when they tell him an excuse like "they just do that"

Although I drive my car year round, I don't use the A/C from the end of September to June and my A/C has never died. There is a leak and they don't know what they're doing or talking about. Take your car to another dealer.

The gremlin business has been slow these days, with all the improvements in airplane safety and refular mechanical service.

Perhaps they have moved on to car? God help us.
