ABS warning light comes on intermittently...

For over a year now, my ABS light comes on and I get a warning on the DIC that my ABS is not working correctly. Usually, I will drive around for a bit and the next time I start the car, the warning light is off and stays off. It seems to get worse during the summer time. It happens with the stock wheels and aftermarket wheels. It is probably a bad sensor but I am taking it to the dealer since it is under warranty anyway. I made sure both connections on the calipers were tight and they were. I am just waiting for the dealer to blame it on aftermarket wheels or brakes even though this started happening when the car was still stock. Just in case they cannot "reproduce" the problem which is the usual, I took pictures of the events as they happened over a weeks time or so. Anybody else have the ABS light issue? Thanks.

***Update as of 8/15**
I just spoke with the service manager. He seemed like a cool guy and was genuinely interested with my concerns. He said he is going to call "district" and talk to them about getting the part replaced. He says they are usually good at working with him. I should hear back from him on Monday at the latest.

If I remeber correctly there were TSBs for BCM updates and bad ground cables in addition to the occaision bad buried in the front wheel hub and rear bracket mounted ABS sensors.

Thanks. I will see what I can dig up.

I did a search for TSBs for my car and there is nothing related to the ABS light issue I am having unfortunately.

I just gone done talking with the Pontiac service department. While a history of the ABS code was stored, they could NOT fix it because they tested the wheel sensor (that is what the code pointed too) and it was working just fine. So the manager basically said unless they can prove that it is broken, they cannot do anything. I explained to the manager that this is unacceptable since this is a major safety issue. When the light comes on, I have neither ABS or traction control. He said he would call the district manager or whomever he had to call and he was still refused. He felt bad that he couldn't replace the sensor or hub and I understand that. GM is not letting him do it basically. GM would rather risk my life then replace a damn part. I know GM is hurting right now but that is ridiculous. Does anybody here have a number I can call or an email address for GM corporate? He said to try to contact them but didn't have the number on him. This is going to get resolved one way or the other. Thanks for the help.

Thanks. I will certainly look into this. I am not sure it is the same sensor though. I think that when the computer sees an ABS code it shuts down traction control automatically.

I think you'll be ok if the ABS or T/C doesn't work in your car. It's not dangerous, just 1970ish. Yes, I would get it fixed as soon as possible, but your car isn't going to fly off the road. Let us know how you get it resolved!

It is just the principle of the matter. The light and noise is annoying enough to stare at all day but for GM to say no to repairing SAFETY equipment and possibly (small chance) put my life at risk is just totally unacceptable to me. This is part of the reason why GM has a bad reputation when it comes to customer service.

Anybody have any numbers I should call or email addresses to get this resolved quickly? I am sure a lengthy search would provide me with the information but I am sure somebody has already dealt with something like this and I am hoping they can help me out. Thanks.

If it is the front sensor buried in the hub replacement is the only option. You do have other options.

Go back to the same Dealer. Ask them to trouble shoot it again. When they tell you they cannot replace for whatever reason ask them firmly but politely to enter a note in your RO that a malfunctioning ABS sensor presents absolutely no safety risk to the operation of your vehicle will not compromise the safety of you, your passengers and others on public roads. Let us know what happens.

That is part of my plan :). What does RO stand for? I am assuming it is in regards to a record of service or something similar.

My friend Denny was just telling me about his '05 ABS light going on. It has been to the dealer twice and they replaced the hub twice. It came back both times. Its just coded today. He asked me about it and I think its the BCM or ABS module or simply a bad connection either at the sensor, body plug, or at the BCM or ABS module. That seems to make the most sense. On that pretex, I had a Jeep once that had an intermittant no start. It turned out the Top Dead Center indicater took two connections before it connected to the ECM. Chrysler simply supplied a complete wire from the TDI to the ECM and the problem was solved. Makes me wonder...

My ABS light was tuning on and off intermittenly, and it ended up being some metal dust, or something, that was on the face of the rear sensors. They are magnetic and were holding it there messing up the signal. I took them out, wiped them clean, re-installed, and haven't had a problem since.

Just a quick update. Ever since the dealer inspected the sensor and tested it, my ABS light has not come on. I am thinking there was some debris caught in there causing the issue although it hasn't been really hot here which is when the light would usually come on. But anyway, it hasn't come on since it was at the dealer and I hope it stays that way.

Thanks for the help guys :).

I had the same problem. It happened occasionally when I would be coming to a gradual stop and I would hear the ABS activate (on dry pavement?) then the "ABS INOP" warning would be displayed. I wasn't too worried about it until it happened in the middle of a corner in the mountains. The next day I took it to the dealership and they replaced the two front hubs and the ABS module.
