Batteries for the GTO are hard to find!!

I put mine in "hibernation" for the winter, and about 2 months after that the battery died, because I did not put a trickle charger on it.

So I just started calling around. I called Sears, AutoZone, PepBoys, Napa, etc...nobody had a battery for the GTO.

I called up the Dealership, they had one and it was 130 dollars. I picked it up and put the battery by itself on a trickle charger for a day or two.

I did not want to wait to put a battery in the GTO. I'm sure I could have ordered it for cheaper, but I didn't want to have the car be non-driveable, in case I had to take it out of the garage quickly.

So yeah, batteries are hard to find for this car. That is all. :)

No, they aren't. It takes a Group 35 which is readily available, it's just that nobody seems to have the GTO in their application guides.
For not much more than you paid for a not-so-great Delco battery you could have had an Optima Red Top which is far superior. Oh well.

The Duralast Gold from Autozone is an excellent battery and it looks great in a Yellow Jacket !!

There are no Optimas with side terminals only, you were looking at the "universal" type with both top and side posts. Although not the preferred configuration it will work with some modification (bending) to the cable terminals, and would have been a better option than the dealer battery.

what part number is that duralast gold? It fit in the hold down with no issues?

The Autozone part number is 35-DLG, it fits with no problems, here is a link with all the BCI battery sizes, it's handy to find a cross for automotive batteries.

That's what mine did, almost immediately, acid coming out from around the positive post.

I've had a Sears battery in mine and when it crapped out I replaced it with a Superstart (O'Reilly brand) they aren't as easy to find as a group 24 battery but they do exist outside of the dealership.

the ac delco batteries i had in both my '98 silverado and my '01 both leaked acid from the positive post and destroyed the cables

you'd think i'd learn my lesson but i still haven't junked the POS in the goat. need to get off my dead ass and do it already...........

the OEM replacement size for the GTO is a group 85 -- its a battery thats commonly found in cars from asia and the pacific rim. its about the same size as a 35, which is very common and will work just fine.

currently my GTO has an optima redtop in it, and its junk -- isn't worth a s**t on a cold start

I just bought 100 D flashlight batteries grouped them together and yanked the battery terminals out of my t.v. remote and hooked right up, I think it added 20 hp too
