Hey guys! I want the GTO community to know that the LS2 waterpump is a poor design. Smell coolant and looked under the hood. Pump is bad. Be aware of this problem on all LS2 cars. I know of a C6 Corvette that had the same problem after only 18,000 miles. Ugh! Sorry to break the news. Two cars in the same neighborhood is not great odds. Somebody needs to send a not to GM and get a RECALL on this part. Maybe that is why GM is changing to a 6.2 liter quickly.

Good lookin out. Would your massive amount of mods have anything to do with it?

i don't know about the bad design, but if my 04 has the same wp, and it has not leaked for 40000 miles. i can tell you if you do put another pump on the car it could leak and be brand new. water pumps and starters have always been a very likely product to go out very often. and then you have some that do not for a couple huindred thousand miles. they are mass produced products that a person puts together and just like the car you are driveing. YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TROUBLE SOMETIME DOWN THE ROAD. wheather it is new or used. as far as the ls1 or the ls2 i haven't read very often where a water pump has gone out on this site. could have missed it though. i know there has been others, but i really do not think that the ls2 pump is a pos. good luck!!!!

Just letting you know that 2 pumps have gone out that I know of in two weeks. Corvettes and GTO's! Sure as hell is not a well made product if they go out after 18-30K miles. So crappy part in opinion considering other cars do nto have this problem for many miles.

Guys I have a Mezeire brand new in the box here at my house. Please someone buy this thing. I am tired of looking at such a bad ass piece that I won't be using. Mine is the street version in black. 525shipped!

Its common on LSx engines for Waterpumps to fail around 18K-36K area. I am just waiting for mine to fail any minute with ~ 35Kmiles on the clock.

Wouldn't freak out about it, it does suck though I will admit. Aftermarket ones are proven to last and actually give you power, may want to consider one of those instead.

Gunk brand (gotta love that name, rhymes with spunk and funk) sells a can of water-solubule lubricant, which essentially is the same stuff we put into CNC machines as 95/5. Look for "Water Pump Lubricant" in the same size as their radiator sealant cans, about 8oz.

I suggest if you want to forestall failure of any water pump in your car, especially now that they are using nylon blades/impellers, pour a can of this into your overflow tank. It's a ripoff at ~$4 compared to the 0.35 it would cost out of the 55 gal drum at work, but still, just do it.

If you keep adding fresh water only they will fail, for sure :)

I have a friend with over than 60K miles, still runs like a champ (stock)

Have you seen LT1's?

:hail: LSX's
Thank you....My LT-1 water pump went out at 16K on my Impala. Talk about a piss pour design. POS leaked right on top of the Opti crap and took it out also. Called a wrecker. No issues with the LS2 design as of yet (knocks on wood)

36k on mine with the mods listed. Not a drop leaked.

First car I ever did the water-soluble oil on was my '96 Z/28.

Water pump didn't fail in 32,000 miles indicated, or xxx,000 miles actual, on account of the crude old skip-shift delete tech in the day that sort of disabled the odo.

If you guys never listen to another thing I say, just go out and buy the Gunk water pump lube and put it in.

43000 on 2 GTO's no problem. Likethe guy said, it is not a perfect world some parts go long before others.

The WP on the LT1 has to be the worst of all GM V8's. Not only do you get to replace the WP when the bushing begins to leak, but half the time you get the priviledge of changing the optispark, too!
Hahaha! I hear ya there on the LT1. I still have my LT1 Trans Am and doing a STS turbo on in this month with a new Crate motor running 15psi. People finding any luck with the Meizere water pump? The are pricy but seems people are happy with them.

I had a 95 Transam with a Lt1. I changed the oil one day cranked the motor up, when I shut it off antifreze was just pouring out if the water pump. No warning or sign it was going bad. When I called the dealer they told me it was 200 for a new one. Ended up getting it from advanced auto parts, the only parts chain to carry it at the time for a 100 dollars.

yea i had a 96 WS-6 T/A and i had the head gasket blow at 110,000 miles so me and my brother. put a new optispark ,water pump, and some other stuff
then a month later i got the Goat 16,000 miles and no problems yet.
