Transmission cooling options

I just recently put a new engine (390) in my 04 gto with the APS kit and we switched to the griffin radiator that does not cool the transmission fluid. We installed the b&m 13inch trans cooler with fan in the rear but temps are still running a little hotter than I would like (between 195 and 208). The one thing I was questioning was that the fan pulls air from the cooler instead of pushing air though it. Which option below do you think is the best option to cool the fluid off a little more?

1.mount a second transmission cooler with fan in the spare tire well in the trunk.

2.install a derale deep pan with cooling tubes along with a 17 in rail transmission cooler. (Right now have a regular deep pan)

I run mine in front of the AC condenser with no fans.

The APS cooler leaves no room for a good trans cooler. One major reason I decided to not go A4. Everything that I have seen on here, people seem to put them below the spare tire with good results. Maybe you need a bigger cooler?

I can't tell you which is better but in my experience the Derale works best when temps are below 80 and there's clean air in front of you while in motion. But as soon as you stop moving temps go back up.

The derale pan didn't do a thing to change my trans temps. I am currently running a Derale hyper cooler mounted in the rear. It's mounted up on the right side of the frame rail directly behind the axle. IMO, a much better location than under the spare tire area! Without the fan on it runs up into the low 210's. I wired the fan to run constant with ignition on and this baby won't get above 170 now. I mean several pulls through 4th and several times launching on the stall and It still was only in the mid 160's.

I wouldn't advise running two coolers in series if they are of a plate design. You will lower your trans pressure and could create more problems than you will solve.

Why type of cooler do you have now? Fin and tube with a fan or a plate cooler?

Running multiple plate and fin coolers in series could create a drop in pressure.

when i was still modded, running a 3600 stall and derale atomic cooler, with a fan, i had problems getting the fluid hot enough at times.

granted that was in front of the rad with a direct source of fresh air blowing on it, but still.

in your picture, it looks like the cooler is right up against the well. space it out some and i bet it would work a bunch better.

Sorry - the pic isnt that good - there is a bout 2 inches between the cooler and the car. Can't really go any lower than that or it will be hanging too low. Which way are the fans blowing for everyone? Mine is blowing air towards the ground which does not seem too effective.

There is no room up front when you have a gigantic APS intercooler and a large griffin radiator. Also don't want to block the airflow to either of the two.

Was testing it last night and the fan doesn't seem to come on until after 195. Supposed to come on at 175. Also want to try reversing the fan and see if that helps. Gonna call B&M and see what they say.
I will repost the pic of where we have it mounted. Away from the exhaust and should get decent airflow there. 2 inch gap between the cooler and car.

Why not reverse the wiring on the fan and see if it helps? Shouldn't take to long and its free to try.

when do your rad fans turn on? is the cooler fan wired to the rad fans by any chance?

also, i know i had mine setup to pull air through the cooler, but it was reversible, however, you needed to reverse the actual fan blade as well as the wiring.

possibly the wiring and fan position aren't jiving. just a thought.

I spoke to the guy at B&M. He thinks the fluid is 195 in the converter (where the ODB sensor is reading for the aeroforce) but by the time it reaches the trans cooler is only at 175. Wants me to measure the temp of the oil in the oil pan and see what it is. This fan is controlled by a thermostat in the transcooler. My radiator fans come on at 160+161. Not sure if the temp in the Aeroforce gauge is 100% correct. Guess it depends on where you are supposed to measure the temps.
