DIfferential Advice Needed

Hello everyone,

I'm in the middle of deciding which direction I should go with my differential build.
The option that I see infront of me are as follow and in this particular order:
1- Wavetrac LSD
2- Detroit Truetrac LSD
3- Speedmaster TorqueWorm LSD
4- Kaaz LSD

I was/am dead set on the Wavetrac. If it wasn't on backorder I would have bought it already. I have read on some posts that its the best option when running stock axels but will get tricky if you upgrade the axels. Only read that TheBannedOne can sort this out with some custom axels.

The Detroit Truetrac is proven and the cheapest of the 4. Lets just say it is the one most widely used.

The Speedmaster TorqueWorm I have no idea about LOL. I came across it by pure luck. On their website: Pontiac GTO / Holden VT-VZ Borg Warner Dana M80 31 Spline TorqueWorm Upgrade Kit
It is offered as a upgrade kit on the site. I mean upgrades are always good right? But I have no knowledge or have found no reviews on them.

The Kaaz which is the more pricier of them all is said to be great. High maintenance cost but worth it as I have read.

Now to give my specifics:
I own a 2006 Pontiac GTO with a LS2 and its a manual.
The car power wise has nothing been done to it.
My current differential leaks and sometimes one tire is spinning harder than the other when doing drifts. So you can imagine its prone to put me in a wall one of these times.
I ordered my Dana Spicer gears from Australia and went with 3.73 gear ratio.
In the far future I will be doing engine mods for more power and the end goal is a supercharger.
So I would like the car to have the supporting mods and parts that can withstand the beating.

My overall question is, looking at what I have supplied as options for the LSD and what my goals are, which LSD is best suited for me and do you see that I need additional mods to the drivetrain?

Your advice and comments are much appreciated.

Thanks in advance and stay safe,

Marc-Antony

The car is my daily, but I occasionally give her the beans from time to time.
Thanks for the recommendation.
Are you using the stock differential still or do you have experience with those two you just recommended?

Have you tried simply changing the fluid in the rear to a high quality fluid with the proper friction modifier? That alone may just get your differential back to working like it should.

I put a kaaz in my first GTO back in 2005 or 2006. Loved it, but sold the car in 2008 after making over over 100 1/8th mile and over 100 1/4 mile passes running mid 6's in the 1/8th and low 10's in the 1/4. That car still had the same kaaz in it issue free a few years ago when was sold again.

My current car has a spool in it and I like it for my purposes. Much cheaper than the other options, but probably not something you would be interested in for your use.

Get the kaaz :)

Thanks for the input Bud.
That show that its a solid unit.
Means also that it can take a lot of launches.
Seeing that I don't drag/race mine much, I feel the Kaaz would be too much of the good for that price.

The Kazz is a nice unit but pretty much overkill for your stock GTO, even with a blower in the long term. I ran a stock LSD on my heads/cam/LSA car for several years before going with a Truetrac. I don't really ever take my car to the track though so your experience may vary.

Thank you for your input.
And what kind of stress did or are you putting on the differential these days?
Cause the Truetrac is the go to for most people but doesn't have the high HP rating as the Wavetrac.

Wavetrac is going to be your lowest maintenance, best warranty, smooth operation, highest hp rated option so it does have a lot going for it.

KAAZ is higher performing unit in racing applications be it drifting, autocross, road racing or drag racing but it has its limits in hp rating. That being said, it does need to be set up properly for particular application to get the most out of it. It also requires oil change once in a while.
You can PM me if you wish to learn more details on KAAZ setup.

I am not going to comment on other options as I haven’t had chance to test it. And there is a reason I didn’t bother testing it in the first place.

Diff conversation with the banned one before doing anything is almost a must. Highly recommended.

Thanks for adding to my knowledge.
I did not know that you needed to setup the Kaaz differential.
I had spoken briefly with TheBannedOne to see if I would let him build the unit for me.
But seeing that I live in The Caribbean, it wasn't that convenient and we couldn't reach an agreement.
But he took the time to enlighten me and that I appreciate.

Believe me when I say I am not that reassured letting someone else build it for me seeing all that is required for this unit.
This is where I say, I wished I lived in The States.

I will be contacting you and thanks again.

I'd go with the TrueTrac, it's tried and true for many vehicles. I've got one in my boosted Gibbs and have never had any problems and one sitting on the shelf if the stock diff in my boosted 04 GTO ever goes out. My GTO's diff did single leg on me at one time, but changing the diff fluid cured it so far. FYI..

I've been happy with my Truetrac. It hasn't seen much strip action, actually only three passes last year, but it has been great handling spirted runs on the street. The rear end is much more controlled than it ever was with the factory LSD once the tires start spinning.

+1 for Truetrac. On my second now & will buy a 3rd when it's time.

Kaaz has a great unit for heavily modded &/or track. I had one in my old R35 GT-R.

I would personally avoid a spool/locker on anything other than real 1/8 or 1/4 track car.

Hey everyone,

How goes it?

Just finished with the differential.
The 3.71 gears mated to the eaton trutrac has me giggling like a little child.
Best decision in my opinion.

Thanks to everyone for pitching in with there advice.

Time to burn some rubber😎.

Take care,

Marc-Antony
